About Our Programs and Fellowships

Thoracic Surgery

Funded fellowship training opportunities are available in Thoracic Surgery to both Canadian and international surgeons.
  • Typically, this program is for candidates who have completed a residency in Thoracic Surgery.
  • It does not lead to accreditation by the Royal College.
  • The program is tailored to the needs of the fellow and varies from 6 months to 2 years in duration.
  • Exposure to all aspects of general thoracic surgery is available depending on the duration of the fellowship.

We have a separate lung transplant fellowship, but 6 months – 1 year can be incorporated into the training if that is desired.

Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplant (Surgical)

Funded fellowship training opportunities are available in Thoracic Surgery to both Canadian and international surgeons.
  • Typically, this program is for candidates who have completed a residency in Thoracic Surgery.
  • It does not lead to accreditation by the Royal College.
  • The program is tailored to the needs of the fellow and varies from 6 months to 2 years in duration.
  • Exposure to all aspects of general thoracic surgery is available depending on the duration of the fellowship.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Area of Focused Competence – Solid Organ Transplant

Now accepting applications for fellowships commencing July 2025

Lung Transplant – Surgical

Funded fellowship training opportunities are available in lung transplantation to both Canadian and international surgeons.
  • The program is tailored to the needs of the fellow and has a 1 year duration.
  • The fellow will be exposed to all aspects of lung transplantation including recipient selection, donor assessment, donor retrieval, recipient operation, pre- and post-operative care, and long term post-operative management.
  • Fellows will be exposed to a mix of cases and may participate in lecture series, journal clubs, institutional rounds and conferences.

We have a separate general thoracic surgery fellowship (5.3.2) but 1 year can be incorporated into the training if that is desired.

Lung Transplant – Medical

One year fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to all medical aspects of lung transplantation including consultation, assessment, follow-up of listed patients, management of post transplant patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Exposure to bronchoscopy, transbronchial biopsies and other procedures in conjunction with the surgical team including ECLS
  • Weekly teaching sessions in lung transplantation plus additional educational rounds through the Ajmera Transplant Centre, Respirology Division, and lung transplant Journal Club

Dedicated research fellowships may also be available with an identified project and supervisor.
